Yesterday we had an amazing opportunity to attend the Cubs v Diamondbacks game in Chicago. We were already scheduled to be in Stevensville for Tim Winter's american wedding reception since they were married in Mexico. Since EV had attended her first Cubs game just over a year ago and Ed wasn't able to make it since he was sick with a massive migraine, I figured we should try the whole experience over again and try to get the entire family together. So I looked up ticket prices for me, Ed, EV, mom, dad and Billy...um, I had to remind myself how much I make in a year and realize they were out of my price range.
Thankfully, the Cubs were playing the Diamondbacks and I knew a Michigan softball alumni who is married to the Arizona closer. I contemplated for a second writing that I knew one of the baseball wives but Kelsey is so much more than a baseball wife. I really do think of JJ as being married to Kelsey, not the other way around! She is such a strong woman who is somehow raising 4 children all while her husband flies around the country. I'm sure she has help but still, she seems like a very devoted mom. The greatest thing about Kelsey is her personality. She's one of those people who lights up a room with her conversations and no matter who is there, everyone seems to congregate around here since she is so witty and hilarious. There is a reason Hutch and Bonnie consider the years she played to be some of their favorites.
We had planned the day to first have lunch at my FAVORITE pizza place in Chicago except they moved locations. They are now located in Evanston, not right in the middle of Rogers Park anymore...boo. So instead we all met up at Hamilton's Bar and Grill. Luckily we were able to meet up with a high school friend of Dad's and one of my all time favorite people: Trish Oberhaus! In all her coolness she biked over to see us on her lunch break. It was great to see her.
Heading down to the field we were able to park at the local police station. However, getting there was a treat and a half...sarcasm. We went down one of the tiny side streets and there was a UPS semi truck trying to make it's way towards us. After a minute or two the street was packed with cars behind us and behind this truck. Somehow he thought all these cars could go around him. Well, the one in front of us did but we were driving our huge green van and even with my Dad's excellent driving skills I had no idea how this was going to work! We were so close to the truck the little brushes on the sides of the truck were in our windows and some guy let us know we were about to take the tire off a parked car. Luckily the car was able to move but there was zero space between us and the truck and cars, like rear view mirror had to be pulled in close.
Just in time for us to park the rain started. And it poured...with lightening and thunder. There was a light lull in the rain so we decided to make a run for it to the park. We made it to the el station just outside Wrigley and it started raining sideways! I was holding EV and she was a little freaked by the thunder, and the el, and the sideways rain! We got soaked just trying to stay out of the rain. Once again, another lull and then it was into the park.
We got there just in time for them to pull the tarp...and put it back on. There was a bunch of water on the tarp so they had to get it off before they could actually take care of the field. Another 1.5 hours goes by and the game starts...4.5 hours after start time. EV munched on carmel corn, hot dogs, pretzels, salsa at Hamilton's, regular pop corn...everything. We stayed until the 5th inning when it started raining again and decided to head out...once again getting soaked to the car.
We took Billy home and stopped at Mustard's Last Stand in Evanton on the way. Fun place where EV then snacked on french fries. Basically, she's only allowed to have fruits and veggies today!
Hours and hours and hours later we got home...around 2 am. Ugh. Baby girl and Ed have napped like crazy today, both completely necessary!
