11/02/2011 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

I've been concerned about my health lately.  There isn't anything wrong with me...yet.  I don't really take care of myself very well though.  So instead of pledging I'm going to lose 1 million pounds or some other nonsense, I'm going to focus on getting my heart healthy.  I was given the adidas miCoach system and have just started using it.

It is a heart rate monitor, pacer and stride sensor.  I haven't used the stride sensor yet, it will eventually go into my shoes.  The heart rate monitor has been really interesting to use since I'm not really sure what to expect from my heart rate.  The pacer allows me to create workouts online then load them into the device. Adidas creates most of these workouts and they are heart rate geared, so I have to keep my heart rate in a certain range. Earlier I thought my resting heart rate was 68 bpm and maybe it is, when I'm lying on the couch or in bed.  I learned today however, my average heart rate was 82 bpm, above the normal and healthy cutoff.  That's what I was afraid of.

This is my run during the morning.  27 total minutes, the first 5 are me walking at a 3.3ish pace.  Then I would bump up the speed to 6 mph for 1 minute, then go back down to 3.4 for 2 minutes.  I'm in the early stages of getting back into running shape.

What I'm hoping for is to get these spikes narrower, meaning my heart recovers faster.

This is my workout run by Adidas.  It was a blue zone recovery workout which means I need to keep my heart rate between 127 and 144. This was achieved by walking at a 3.2-3.3 pace depending on my heart rate.  If I got too high, like at minute 2:00, a little voice tells me to slow down.

I scored a 90%...whatever that means.

This is what my heart did for 5 hours from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm:

Apparently I died at 2 points.  Also the spike near the end is climbing the stairs out of my office.  Really this just me sitting at my desk, getting up to go to the printer or chat with someone in another office.  I also bounce my leg a lot during the day. I averaged 82 bpm, which is no good since "health" is 70 and below.  I'm working on it.  I also notice I need to get up and do more during the day, for example: using the 1st floor restroom so I have to go upstairs, taking a walk around Assembly Hall if I need a mental break, doing a few jumping jacks.

We'll see how it improves.  I don't plan on wearing the monitor all day, every day, but I am going to spend some time in it.

  1. This is so neat! I just told RB I want one of those for Christmas :-) Good luck with your running - I need to get back on the horse as well.

  2. In high school your brother's resting heart rate was 42. We thought he must be dead. Luckily we were wrong.
